The Economics of Censorship Resistance

چکیده

We propose the first economic model of censorship resistance. Early peer-to-peer systems, such as the Eternity Service, sought to achieve censorshop resistance by distributing content randomly over the whole Internet. An alternative approach is to encourage nodes to serve resources they are interested in. Both architectures have been implemented but so far there has been no quantitative analysis of the protection they provide. We develop a model inspired by economics and conflict theory to analyse these systems. Under our assumptions, resource distribution according to nodes’ individual preferences provides better stability and resistance to censorship. Our results may have wider application too.

Linear Wavelet-Based Estimation for Derivative of a Density under Random Censorship

In this paper we consider estimation of the derivative of a density based on wavelets methods using randomly right censored data. We extend the results regarding the asymptotic convergence rates due to Prakasa Rao (1996) and Chaubey et al. (2008) under random censorship model. Our treatment is facilitated by results of Stute (1995) and Li (2003) that enable us in demonstrating that the same con...

Text Screening (Censorship) in Iran: A Historical Perspective

Censorship has a long history in Iran that has interfered with text production, i.e., original writing as well as translation. This phenomenon seems to have marked the borderline between the government and the ‘enlightened’ intellectuals throughout history in Iran. Different governments have delineated ‘redlines’ for authors and translators and dealt with these constructors of culture based on ...

CORDON—A Taxonomy of Internet Censorship Resistance Strategies

We present a taxonomy of Internet censorship resistance strategies and techniques extracted from analyzing proposed and implemented systems. We categorize the strategies into the following six types to form the CORDON taxonomy: Collateral damage, where the damage caused by censorship would outweigh its benefits; Outside scope of influence, where the censor is powerless to act due to it having n...

SoK: Making Sense of Censorship Resistance Systems

An increasing number of countries implement Internet censorship at different scales and for a variety of reasons. Several censorship resistance systems (CRSs) have emerged to help bypass such blocks. The diversity of the censor’s attack landscape has led to an arms race, leading to a dramatic speed of evolution of CRSs. The inherent complexity of CRSs and the breadth of work in this area makes ...
